Im going to Rome and Florence for 15 days in June and July. Im splitting my hotels in Rome, far west side by the stadium and over
the Tiber river and then just north of the Colosseum. Im going alone and Im not a picky eater, but i want to go to some of the more traditional places where locals would eat,not the expensive tourist places. Google maps helps some, but some first hand, eat here or dont eat there advice for Rome or Florence would be great. Ravioli, gelato. MMMMMMM
Elizabeth Minichelli’s EAT ROME app will help you a lot.
Also, Katie Parla’s Rome app.
I think these two also have Florence apps, not sure.
If you do a search on this site you will find suggestions.
In Rome I've learned that the most fun, and the most local food, is in Trastevere. Find a place that's crowded, loud, and has their menu in Italian. The only problem you'll have is being alone. If you go to eat early or late you'll have a better chance of being seated outside. Otherwise, they will want to put you indoors. That doesn't have to be all that bad! Last summer it was so hot I didn't mind being inside even if the airconditioner was barely noticeable. Cacio e Pepe - proof that life is worth living! I travel alone too and refuse to go hungry in Italy!

In 2014, we ate at Hostaria Il Desco on Villa delle Terme twice during our stay in Florence. I am bit of a carnivore, and their bistecca ala fiorentina was the best steak I have ever had in my life. Our fellow diners appeared to be a mix of English and non-English speakers. I have no idea if they were locals or not.
