Eating choice - Milan or Domodossola?

This may seem like a silly question, but I really am serious. Trying to decide on train times for a long travel day. We are going Venice - Lauterbrunnen on a Saturday and I'm wondering if it'd be better to book our first train ticket from Venice - Milan, have a longer break there to eat lunch, or Venice - Domodossola and eat some lunch there before continuing on. We do want to get to Lauterbrunnen before dark (which, in May, when would that be?).

Or, can you give some suggestions of food we could buy in Venice the night before and take for lunch on the train?

Thanks everyone!

Milano Centrale station has all sorts of food for both takeaway and eating in. It tends to be pretty decent. Last spring I was hurrying to a train and just put money in a sandwich vending machine on the platform and even that was pretty good.

I've never looked for food at Domodossola but my impression is that is barely more than a border crossing railway town that since the border restrictions were relaxed and now that Switzerland is a member of the Schengen agreement is now an extremely sleepy border crossing wide place in the rails. If there is any food there I wouldn't expect much or much quality; you may even get caught in the particularly Italian custom of closing for lunch and pausa. Yes, restaurants and food shops which close to allow their staff to have their lunch and pausa.

I still haven't quite figured out why you are stopping in Domodossola. If you are getting a Swiss Pass, simply take one of the EC that go direct from Milan Centrale to Spiez, paying for the fare from Milan to Domodossola, and just stay on the train with the pass after Domodossola. We often pack a sandwich/salad and something to drink while we are relaxing on the train.
