My wife and I will be staying in Vernazza for 3 nights then making our way to Paris. Based on what I've read the easiest way for us to do so will be to take a flight from Pisa to Paris. Most people have suggested the best low fare airline to go with EasyJet (other option being RyanAir). The main area of caution I've heard from others is the luggage fee's and inability to sit next eachother. I assume the best bet for us is to buy our "hold luggage" online to save money? Also, do you recommend paying extra to sit next to one another? Or would you just suggest trying to arrive early in order to be firs in line (read it was first come first serve), if so, how early would you recommend? Thanks for any help!
We flew EasyJet from Paris to Rome last spring. We paid a small amount more to get reserved seats. They are very strict with their carry size and only one carry on rule. While we were waiting in line to board one of the attendants insisted that a lady in front of us put her fanny pack in her suitcase! They mean it when they say only one bag, and they will eye those bags and make sure they fit in the rack. There is a much larger fee to check them at the airport, so if you have any doubt about the size of your bag, pay for checking it when you purchase your ticket. Despite the above, the flight was fine and we wouldn't hesitate to fly with them again. Happy travels!
Tyler, EasyJet is a good choice to use for the flight to Paris. I tend to use them once or twice a year, and have always found the service good. RyanAir is another story.... There will be fees for checked luggage. I'd have to look at the website for the weight allowance for checked luggage. If you think your luggage will be over their allowable limit, it's far cheaper for pay for the extra weight at the time of booking rather than at the gate. I usually pay for the next highest tier, just to make sure I won't be over weight. They do allow seat seleçtion for an extra charge, so if you want to sit together that would be the best way to assure you can stay together. Of course, you could take your chances, but when they call for "general boarding", the scene often resembles a stampede at the OK Corral so sitting together may not happen. I paid for the optional priority boarding on my last flight, and was glad that I did! They are strict about the one carry-on bag rule, of the approved size. You MUST be able to lift the bag into the overhead bin on your own. As you know about this rule in advance, it's not a big deal to adjust to it. They changed their procedures this spring, and don't have check-in at airports anymore (not sure if that applies to ALL of the airports they operate at). Passengers can check-in online and print their boarding pass 30 days prior to the flight. With this new system, they do have a baggage dróp for checked luggage.
Easyjet is a great, cheap airline. Even with the assigned seat charge and baggage fees, still cheap. I don't care for RyanAir. Choice between the two go with Easyjet. Couple web sites for discount EU flights: www.skyscanner.net www.dohop.com
Thanks for the help thus far.
One final question, we will taking the train from Vernazza to Pisa and our flight from Pisa will departing at 4:30pm. How far out of the way would it be for us to stop and just see the leaning tower? I figure since we are so close, we almost have to make the detour to see it. Just curious if it is a ways away from the train station that we will be arriving in Pisa in (keep in mind we will also have our luggage with us). And then also, if our flight leaves at 4:30pm, what time do you think we would have to leave Vernazza in order to get to Pisa, see the leaning tower quick, and then get to the airport to catch our flight at 4:30pm. THanks for the help!
Easyjet now assign seat numbers at check-in. So there is now no need for the stampede to be first on board. You may get adjoining seats assigned but the only way to guarantee sitting together is to pay for them.
I'm slightly confused about the Easyjet luggage policy. First things first, "hold luggage" refers to to luggage that they ship for you that is not a carry on correct?
Second...most airlines usually give you one piece of luggage to check in. Does Easyjet provide any? Or since we have 2 of us, do we have to purchase 2 items of hold luggage seperate?
Third...the hold luggage that purchase is a COMBINED hold luggage. So as long as our bags are under the combined amount (with no single bag over 32K) we are fine correct?
Fourth and final...one carry on bag IS included with our ticket purchase, just must be under 50 x 40 x 20cm to be gauranteed?
Please let me know if I'm missing anything. I just want to be sure before I purchase our tickets that I know how much Hold Luggage Weight I should be adding. Thanks!
Tyler,
Just to clarify the terminology, "hold luggage" refers to checked luggage.
I'm sure you've already read this, but HERE IS the "official" page on luggage. At the beginning they state "You can add up to three items of hold luggage per passenger while booking online. There is a charge for each hold item". The minimum amount you can purchase is 20 kG (44 lbs.), and if I'm reading correctly the charge for that will be €35 per item if you prepay and use the Bag Drop service. The charge will be higher if your bag is found overweight at the gate.
Also mentioned is that two passengers can "pool" their luggage, within the weight allowances provided. It's difficult to offer specific advice, as I have no idea what type of luggage you and your Wife travel with, or what it weighs.
I normally travel solo, and I know that my checked Pack will be close to or perhaps a bit over 20 kG. In order to avoid getting nicked with an overweight charge at the gate, I always pay for the next highest weight tier at the time of booking. Therefore I have to pay the initial €35 for one item, plus 3 kG extra at a cost of €4 per kilo (excess baggage fees can only be purchased in increments of 3 kG). That provides me with a limit of 23 kG or about 50 lbs. That's probably a bit more than I need, but better to be on the "safe side", and I've never been found to be over the limit.
Your question, "Or since we have 2 of us, do we have to purchase 2 items of hold luggage seperate?"
From the website, "There is a charge for each hold item." However, the WEIGHT of the two items can be pooled.
Regarding carry-on luggage, they allow ONE item per passenger which doesn't mean "one plus a personal item such as a Purse or Laptop case". It means ONE ONLY of the approved size, and they WILL check. They don't specify a weight limit, except that passengers must be able to lift their own luggage into the overhead bin. In my experience if the bag looks like it's "close to" the approved size, they won't insist on it being placed in the sizing frame. The agents seem to be more focused on the "one bag" rule than they are on the size (unless the bag is obviously WAY larger than their limits).
Despite the seemingly complicated rules, EasyJet is my preferred budget airline in Europe and I always try to book with them first. Once you get used to the routine, it's not difficult to manage the luggage situation.
You'll likely want to check-in and get your Boarding Pass online, and then just use the Bag Drop service that they've now instituted at many airports. I used it for the first time this year and the process was relatively easy.
Cheers!
Since you're going to look up www.easyjet.com anyhow (you'd better), pay close attention to the check-in procedures, which you should plan to do on-line. Some changes recently affect the way seats are assigned. Remember, you're only in the plane for a couple of hours at most and you're paying not very much even with the extra fees.
Thanks so much for the help. I think after reading the suggestions I am going to error on the side of caution and pre-purchase more weight than I think we need, because who knows how many souvenirs we are going to come back with that will add extra weight onto our luggage and this is one of our last flights.
