We are spending the Christmas holiday in Sicily flying into Catania for eight nights. We are planning the first two nights in Catania. We understand we likely need reservations for Christmas Eve dinner and Christmas Day lunch. Any recommendations we also are interested in seeing historic sites possibly Taormina and Ortega and other historic sites. We would like to use public transportation, but I am concerned about holiday schedules. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
Great choice! Expect sharply reduced buses and trains on the 25th–26th, so plan the Catania→Taormina/Ortigia moves for other days or book a private transfer. Reserve your Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals now, since many places do fixed menus and fill up
I think December 27 may also be risky; there are comparatively few inter-city buses running on Sundays. However, there should be frequent rail service from Catania to Taormina-Giardini (located below town of Taormina) and to Siracusa (for Ortygia).
Great point about the 27th. Is there a website for bus schedule?
Also, any recommendation for restaurants in Catania for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?
