Eastern or Western Sicily in 7-8 days?

We are a couple in our 20s planning on taking a honeymoon trip to Rome-->Amalfi-->Sicily. Since we only have 7-8 days in Sicily, it appears that we have to choose either eastern or western Sicily. We love to walk a lot and explore. We would like to see some historical sites and hike in nature and the city. But we want to spend a large part of this week swimming on beautiful beaches. We are planning to rent a car while there. Which side of Sicily? And what cities/beaches to explore on that side?

Thank you so much!

Some options: beaches in Cefalu, Agrigento, Selinunte (from the western side near Palermo). Many cities along the eastern coast as well (Taormina, Siracusa (small beach area in Ortigia).

Beaches are everywhere.
In Western Sicily, You might like Scopello as a base. It's next to the Zingaro natural Reserve.
On the northern end of the Reserve is the village of San Vito Lo Capo, with Italy's top rated beach.
In the same area but closer to Palermo you can also visit famous Mondello

Scopello is a great base to visit Segesta, Selinunte, Erice, Trapani, and even Palermo, although you may want to stay in Palermo itself for a couple of nights. Don't rent a car while in Palermo, which has the worst traffic in Europe after Istanbul. Pick up the car after you visit Palermo (or return it before you visit Palermo).
