We are staying between Vasto and Pescara on the Adriatic coast in June 2025. We're looking for ideas for other cities, day trips or short 2-3 day excursions from this area. We love hiking, history and food and wine, and appreciate any suggestions for what to see and do.
Depending on your transportation and train routes, Ravenna is a beautiful town north. It deserves an overnight or two stay if that works in your schedule.
Below are the tourism official websites from Abruzzo and Molise, the two regions closest to you (Pescara and Vasto are in Abruzzo). Lots of good suggestions in them.

The northernmost part of Apulia (Puglia), in particular the Gargano Peninsula is not that far either.

Ravenna is not close to where you are staying. It would be at least 4+ hours each way by car and somewhat longer by train. Even Rome or Naples would be much closer.
My husband and I really enjoyed Vieste and Peschici in the Gargano.
Look for a Bradt Guide--they are excellent for areas that don't have a lot of coverage elsewhere. Their next Abruzzo Guide is coming in February.
Are you going to have a car?
When I visited Marche, I loved Ascoli Piceno and it would be a great contender for a few day getaway (2 hr by train from Pescara--with a car would be better for exploring the vicinity).
Do not miss Ravenna.
Depending on exactly where you are staying and how long you want to drive look at (in order of interest IMO):
Ascoli Piceno This was the day we spent there:
