Eastern Coast?

I see a lot of posts for things to do along the western coast (CT, Milan, Rome, Naples, Tuscany etc) which I have been to all those places on my last trip. I really loved Italy and was going to return this summer (June-July, my husband is a teacher, it's the only time we can go). I wanted to explore the east side of Italy but I can't seem to find anything about it in travel books?! Any suggestions?

Buy the Michelin Green Guide for Italy. It ranks everything you'd ever want to see in the whole country, both in the text and on the map. It's a great trip planner and an invaluable asset on the road. We never travel anywhere without one for the countries we'll be in. In fact, it's the only book we take.

Usually, information is listed under the names of the regions. There's Le Marche, Abruzzo, Molisa and Apulia. Some guidebooks include some information about those regions, but for more information you may have to go to more specialized books. It looks like there's a Cadogan Guide that covers Abruzzo, as well.

We recently traveled to Le Marche, and used both the Cadogan Guide to Tuscany, Umbria and the Marches (the English name for Le Marche) and the Italian Touring Guide to Le Marche. Both were helpful; the latter was more helpful.

Enjoy your travel and the planning!

My wife and I spent 3 months in Italy a couple of years ago. Had a great time on the east coast. Contact me if you would like a copy of our detailed agenda/itinerary. Joe

Well, Venice and Ravenna are both on the Adriatic coast of Italy and there's plenty on them, so I assume you mean farther south, and that area is definitely not as frequented by American tourists.

Don't forget the interior, though. Umbria is quite lovely.

Melissa,

One location you might have a look at is Vieste which is on the Gargano peninsula (on the east side). It's an incredibly beautiful small town. Have a look at Their Website for further information. Also have a look at This Hotel (be sure to watch the video - I really like the music they chose for the video).

The area has an interesting history, and I found the stories about the Trabucchi very interesting. You could also try a Gargano Caves tour by boat. It's an incredibly beautiful area with lots to see and do (at least IMHO).

If you want to explore a wider area, you could also consider visits to Alberobello (Trulli houses) and/or Matera (the Sassi is incredible!).

Happy travels!
