Easter Sunday/Monday in Rome

We're looking at booking a flight that lands in Rome on Easter Sunday. At that point we could either stay in Rome for a few days or head to Puglia where we'll be spending the majority of our vacation. If we decide to do the latter, are things like rental car counters, gas stations, restaurants, etc open both on the way to Puglia (specifically Vieste/Gargano Peninsula) as well as when we get there? If we do the former, how crazy and overcrowded is Rome on Easter Sunday/Monday? I'm assuming that the prices of hotels are sky high and that many sites are closed, but I'd love to get someone's first hand experience.

I haven't been in Rome, but I was in Venice around Easter, and I would never do it again, (unless I was staying on the back canals the entire time). Most Italians are on vacation Easter Monday, and they are out and about, and yes, things were packed.
With either plan, have a great trip and safe travels!

Easter Monday is a festive day in Italy, and the tradition is having a family day trip somewhere, so roads are packed. Restaurants are mostly open (it could well be one of their best business days in the year) but be sure to reserve, well in advance for famous restaurants. Gas stations are mostly open and most of them are self service anyway. Not so sure about car rentals, be sure to ask them in advance.
