I will be in Naples over Easter weekend. I was planning to attend Easter Mass at the Duomo and then head over to the Archaeological Museum in the afternoon. I believe the Museum is open, but it happens to fall on the first Sunday of the month, which is a free day. Will the lines be terrible? Should I reorganize my plans and visit the museum on a different day? I will be in Naples for 4 nights and have already planned to a walking tour of the city, day trip to Paestum and tour of Herculaneum. (We have already visited Pompeii.)
I can only address your question in a very general way based on our experience with free days in a number of different European cities. CRAZY !!! The locals recognize a good value and time is on their side. Haven't been in Naples for a free day but every other free day is an absolutely zoo. And then to couple it with Easter. I personally would plan another activity.
You will also want to check the board by the ticket office to see what rooms are closed. Have been to the museum 2x (July and Oct.) and there are always rooms closed if short staffed. Still haven't seen the Pompeii Mosaics.
But did you see the secret room? At one time you need the Pope's permission to enter that room.
For what it's worth, we visited the Arch Museum in Naples first Sunday last March. Had no idea it was free, I think admission is under 10 Euro. About a 45 minute wait at noon, not unpleasant.
Thank you all for your replies. This forum has been such a wonderful resource.
