Easter in Italy -- how bad are the crowds?

We are planning a trip to Italy next spring, and unfortunately due to using miles we will have to be there during Easter (week before and week after). I realize it'll be pretty darn crowded then, but how bad is it really? Right now the plan is to go to Rome after Easter so hopefully it won't be quite as bad as it could be. How will things be in Venice, Florence, and Cinque Terre (the other places we'll be visiting)? Also, are the museums (such as the Uffizi) open outside of the actual holidays (Easter, Easter Monday, Liberation Day, May Day)?

Thanks for any help/advice.

Rome will be the most crowded. If you spend the holiday outside of town you should be fine.

If you plan properly, you should be fine. Just don't travel at the start of weekends that include the holidays or to which holidays can be attached. For example, if a holiday falls on a Thursday, people will take a 4-day holiday; and the roads will be packed that day. The cities, other than Rome during Holy Week, should be okay. I wouldn't venture to the CT during holiday weekends. As for museums, you need to check on them individually; but almost none is open on Mondays ever.

Easter next year is at the end of April, a crowded time of year even without Easter. The Vatican will be extremely crowded but reserve tickets to the Vatican Museum and you'll be fine. Book museums in the other cities you wish to visit as well. The extra fee to skip the lines is well worth it!
