Easter in Italy

Looks like we will be in Italy next year for two weeks with the second week being Easter week. Any suggestions or ideas of what to expect? Travel plans are flexible for most of the two weeks. We will fly into and out of Rome. Thanks.

I was in Rome for Easter two year ago and I absolutely loved it. You can ignore it - or you can "get into it." I'm R. Catholic, and I got tickets through my local Archdiocese for the Easter Mass in St Peters Square. Me and 100,000 other people. I LOVED it. On Good Friday they do the Stations of the Cross starting at the Collosseum. I don't know if they take the same route every year, but you can "google'" it. Now, if you're not Christian or not Catholic I will say you can just ignore the whole thing, except you may want to arrange a dinner reservation through your hotel for both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday as a lot of the smaller restaurants may be closed. Rome IS a tourist destination, so there will be plenty of places open near the major sites. We took the train on Easter Monday from Rome to Florence and didn't notice the train being overly crowded, but we booked first class tickets in advance on trenitalia.

So, whether you choose to participate or ignore it, you're sure to have a great trip in The Eternal City.
