Easter in Italy 2026

I'm looking for info about how the Easter holidays will affect crowds, store and restaurant closures, public transportation and tours. I just realized that Easter is early this year, and my short trip to Italy will be right over the holiday.

I will be in Florence the week before Easter, and planned to head to Sorrento over the Easter weekend before Naples and Pompeii the following week.

Re Florence, anything I should do or plan differently because of the lead up to the holiday? (I'm interested in parks and piazzas, museums, food and wine, historical locations for ex the Pitti Palace, wandering around and shopping)

I was thinking to take the Mondo Amalfi Coast tour out of Sorrento either Sunday or Monday (turns out those are Easter and Easter Monday), and take the ferry to Capri on the other day. But is this going to work that weekend? Will it be crowded with holidaying locals? Or perhaps everything shut down for the holiday? Is there somewhere else in Italy that would be less impacted by the religious observances?

Thanks so much for your suggestions.

Hi!

On easter, everything should be open. The day after Easter (Pasqua), Pasquetta, shops and restaurants may be closed. Public transport will be limited, but available. Trains will be close to normal.

Sorrento will likely be very closed considering it is early in it's season, but it will be cool. Yes, it will be super crowded.

If you stick around in Florence for Easter, you can view the Scoppio del Carro in Piazza del Duomo. Highly entertaining - check out videos online.

Nothing that interests a tourist will be closed for Easter.
Businesses (offices), banks, government offices, will be closed.
Restaurants will be largely open.
Hotels will be open.
Churches will be open.
Museums will be open for the most part (but many close once a week so you need to check their websites for opening times)
Stores may be closed on Easter Day and on Easter Monday (a major holiday also), but not necessarily all, especially in the city center of Rome or Florence.
The above will be valid for Sorrento as well, which will be packed with day trippers on that weekend.

We once spent Easter in Milan. The only disruption we really noticed was on Easter Sunday itself there were almost no restaurants open for dinner. We ate at a very touristy pizza place as it was one of the only places open.
