Spending a week on the Amalfi Coast before heading towards Bari And points south. Any suggestions on what picturesque little town in which to base ourselves for a week? Areas not to miss?
Will you have a car? What time of year will you be going? Are you wanting someplace along the Adriatic coastline?
Anywhere in the Salento (prov. of Lecce) is beautiful (Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Gallipoli, Porto Cesareo etc.).
Use Google Image search to see what you might like. On the northern side of Puglia, the best area is the Gargano Peninsula (the spur of the Italian boot). Vieste is probably the town that comes to mind when we are talking about the Gargano. Shortly off the coast from Gargano, the Tremiti islands have a fantastic sea. Use Google search and look at the images of all above locations. Amazing places!
Michael, we will have a car, and are going in early October....would like to be on or near the coast.
Roberto, thanks for the tips...I will check them out.
We visited Puglia last October. Many seaside towns (i.e. Otranto) were pretty quiet and mostly shut down. I would recommend that you base yourselves on a masseria (i.e. agriturismo). There are many near Ostuni and Fasano as well as further south in the Salento. Then you can drive around the Val d'Itria (Alberobello, Locorotondo, Noci) and visit the seaside towns (Otranto and Gallipoli) as well. We spent five nights at Masseria Montenapoleone; great reviews on Trip Advisor. It was very near the sea (with sea views from some rooms & the pool). Wonderful place. We also spent a week in Lecce and wished we were back on the masseria!
