Hi everybody,
I'm headed to Italy at the of October and my trip starts in Rome. I have been before, but it was back in 1998, so it might as well be my first time. Travel and real life logistics conspired to make my first stop Rome and I'm a little uneasy. One thing I've noticed in the last decade or so is that I seem to need more time to "settle in" to traveling when my trip begins in a more frenetic pace. I don't know if that's age or being more likely to be frazzled and stressed ahead of the trip, but I've noticed it can really impact (negatively) my experiences with my first stop. In 2017, I found myself disliking Palermo and happy to leave, but it was only on later reflection that I decided the problem was less Palermo and more that I was too keyed up to allow for the necessary "relax, and let the world happen to you." Maybe this is the most obvious "insight" in the world, but for me, as a native New Yorker who loves and defends big, loud, vibrant cities, it was an odd realization.
Anyway, Rome. Any suggestions for things to do/places to decamp if find myself in "sensory overload?" I don't have a lot of time and don't want to "miss" Rome, but it's not as if I can fit the whole city in anyway. I'm history and art/general culture-focused and tend to find myself in a lot of museums, but I don't want to "hide" way either. Has anybody been to Ostia? I know the 7 day, RS "Best of Rome" tour covers it, but it also seems popular with local tourists, so I don't know if it would be notably more peaceful.
Grateful for any thoughts and thanks in advance!
Caroline
