After a few nights in Venice, I am wondering which Hertz car rental office might be easier to start our road trip from....the Venezia Mestre location off island, or the Piazzale Roma location on the island? Any recommendations? Jan

I would think the Piazzale Roma location would work better. Just be careful driving back to the mainland on the causeway because radar/cameras are in use, and there's not any leeway for going over the speed limit of approximately 35 mph.

Piazzale Roma and it's easy. I was going to mention the speeding part on the bridge, but the previous poster provided that cogent suggestion.

Also, if you're watching your time but don't want to speed on the causeway, allow time for a bit of a line at the pick-up office. Or just go with the flow.
