Easier trip to Rome airport -- leaving from Venice or Cinque Terre?

Flying round-trip into/out of Rome and trying to decide whether to do:

Rome --> Venice --> Florence --> Cinque Terre

or

Rome --> Cinque Terre --> Florence --> Venice

Our flight home doesn't depart until 6pm, so we were thinking we'd just head towards Rome first thing in the morning the day of our flight. I'm guessing it'll be much less risky to make Venice our last stop, since it's a direct (and fairly frequent) train between the two -- or are they both pretty similar? (Or both calling it too close?) We'd rather make our travel day annoyingly long than have two travel days in a row, if possible.

Venice would be much easier and no change of train!

I'd put all your Rome time at the end. Travel to one of the other spots that first jet-lagged day, and work your way back to Rome.

What Liz said! That is what I would, too. It is too iffy to try to get to Rome on flight day. What if there is a train strike? If you are already in Rome, at least you can get to the airport.

I know, I like the idea of getting all the travel out of the way and then weaving our way back down -- but I really wanted to see the Angelus, and that's only happening on Day 3 or Day 7 of our trip -- no dates scheduled towards the end of our trip. So I was trying to avoid missing that. How common are train strikes? Is there typically a few days warning -- i.e. we could leave Venice a day early (or rent a car) if needed?

If it's too iffy to plan a train ride the day of our flight -- and I can't talk myself out of missing the Angelus (I'm not even super Catholic...I just love this pope!) -- I'm also not opposed to coming back to an airport hotel the night before and just letting the kids hit the pool.

That may be the best option.

Too many random things to list that could mess up a long distance dash to FCO

Either is fine, but I would lean toward having Venice last as there are so many trains to Rome. Be sure you are booked ona high-speed Freccia train as those are not cancelled in the case of a strike. And leave early in the day even thought your plane is not until 6 pm. Maybe a 9 am train, lunch in Rome, then a cab to FCO.

OR do a little backtracking, and put Florence at the end, so either CT/Venice/Florence or Venice/CT/Florence.
