Earthquake Relief Fund

Is there any interest out there in creating an earthquake fund in the name of the Rick Steves' travel group? Perhaps this is an inappropriate question for anyone other than Rick. Please forgive me if that is the case. After spending 35 days in Tuscany, I too feel so terrible about the ongoing personal suffering and the destruction of so many historic buildings. Maybe we can help in some way other than the International Red Cross.

Your idea is kind , but I think it is best if people donate to their local Red Cross but ask it be marked for Italy.

It is so sad, the loss of life continues to climb.. it was only a day ago the first reports were claiming 5 deaths, now I think it is over 200 !!!

Bob: To reach members of Rick's staff, you must use the Contact Us hypertext at the bottom of this page. None of the members of this forum are on Rick's staff and nothing posted here is likely to reach Rick or members of his staff. Your kind suggestion may be (I have no information about this) along the same lines as something Rick's organization is planning, so there could be synergies there, if you contact Rick's organization directly with an inquiry.

The Italian Consulate in Philadelphia has recommended making donations directly to the Italian Red Cross (CRI). Website is http://www.cri.it/donazioni. To direct the donation to earthquake relief, designate PRO TERREMOTO ABRUZZO in the causale (description of payment) field.

Thanks Frank,
The Italian Red Cross sounds like a good way to go. Thanks also for the other kind replies. Perhaps we can help ease the suffering just a tiny bit through our donations. I will remain open to any other good ideas as well.

James, the earthquake happened in the Abruzzo region, particularly around the city of L'Aquila, which is about 230 miles south and a little east of Florence and about 60-70 miles from Rome. Being the central, mountainous part of Italy, it is one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the country, which I believe I read sits on two fault lines.

It is really a tragedy and my heart goes out to all of them.
