Early Train from Lake Como to Malpensa

We will be staying in Lake Como - not sure where exactly yet - and am trying to find an online train schedule. Our flight out of Malpensa leaves around 12:30pm so we would need to be at the airport around 10:30am. I don't know if there is an early enough train to get us there on time. Is there any place that will show me the departure and arrival times from Varenna? I am having a hard time finding a site that will show me my options. Or should we just spend the night near the airport?

Thanks

You won't have to stay near the air terminal. You can stay in Milan and take the early train or bus to Malpensa. It takes about 30 minutes.

Go to bahn.de and enter in varenna to milan. It will show you specified times. Trips take about hour to the Milan Central station, but remember you will have to take a bus to the airport (about another hour). There are plenty of early a.m. trains leaving Varenna, about one an hour.

One thing to point out though, if you are not staying in Varenna, you will have to take a boat to Varenna from where you are staying and the boat service only starts at a certain time, maybe around 7ish if memory serves correctly.

www.trenitalia.com is a good resource for checking times. It shows trains departing Varenna-Esino for Milano Centrale starting at 05:36am and about hourly thereafter.

You should be fine with a 12:30 departure. Frank is correct that the first train out of Varenna departs at 05:40 and arrives at the Milan train station at 06:52. You could even take the next train departing at 06:21 and arriving in Milan at 07:40. You're then looking at another hour by bus. That puts you at the airport by about 09:30-10:00.

Thanks so much for the suggestions...especially Larry. I think my problem with the timetables is that there are no schedules for June yet.

Kristen, thanks for your comment. It's often tough to get accurate train schedules on Trenitalia more than 90 days out. Many of the high-volume posters will simply search a week or two out for a sample schedule. When Trenitalia updates their schedules, the train runs and times don't change much if any at all. Just double check as you get within date range.
