My husband and I have decided to celebrate our 10th anniversary by taking a 14 night trip to Northern Italy in either April or May of 2017. We typically prefer to travel in the shoulder or off-season to avoid crowds and heat. I've been scouring these forums and it seems like there are pros and cons to visiting both in April and May. It seems like in April, the crowds are less and prices are cheaper, but the weather is more unpredictable/cooler and in May the weather is better, but the crowds are worse and everything is more expensive.
- So my question regarding when we take the trip is this...is April *that much less crowded and cheaper to make it worth the possible poorer weather?*
Also, any feedback on our very tentative itinerary would be greatly appreciated!
- Day 1 - Arrive in Venice from STL (probably afternoon sometime)
- Days 2-3 - Venice and probably Murano/Burano
- Day 4 - Travel to Cinque Terre, early morning
- Day 5 - All Day Cinque Terre
- Day 6 - Travel to Tuscany or Umbria - rent a car for our time there
- Days 7-11 - Thinking 3 nights near Orvieto exploring Umbria(this is based on finding an amazing-looking Agritursimo recommended in the forums), then 3 nights near Siena (also based on Agriturismo find)
- Day 12 - Depart early for Florence
- Day 13 - Florence
- Day 14 - Depart for STL from Florence
I know I may get some feedback that we are spending a lot of time in Umbria and Tuscany, but my husband and I are great wine lovers and love spending relaxing time in rural locations, so it seems like this would be a highlight of the trip for us.
I am kind of waffling on Cinque Terre after reading some posts about crowds. Like I mentioned above, we're not big crowd people and it's sounding like it will be overrun. Any thoughts on that? Last April we visited Salzburg and it was so packed to the gills with people it was very difficult to get around and enjoy some of the sights, I'd hate for a similar experience in Italy.
I really appreciate any and all feedback you would care to give! Thank you in advance for your help!
