Early plane out of FCO

I have been checking flights out of Rome in October and the cheapest flights leave at 6:30 am to the US. We are staying by the Trevi Fountain. I know that we will not be able to take the fast train to the airport but will we be able to get a taxi in that area at 4:00 am to get to the airport with plenty of time? Any help will be appreciated.

Ask your hotel to arrange it for you. Or, I had a similar situation not long ago and decided it was less stressful to book a room for the last night at the Hilton right in the airport. I told them I would arrive after 21:00, stayed the whole day and evening in town (leaving my luggage securely at the hotel I had been at the rest of the week), then picked up my bag and took the taxi the hotel arranged for me to the airport at about 21:00. Got a restful night's sleep, and 5-minute walk to the terminal for relaxing check-in, etc. Significantly reduced the stress of an early-morning outbound.

If it's a 6:30am flight is not directly to the US. You are stopping somewhere in Europe. The first flight out of Rome to the US is at 9:00am (to Miami with Alitalia). For a intra EU flight you should be at the airport 75 min prior to departure (5:15am for a 6:30am departure). A taxi from the city center will take approx. 30-35 min max at that time in the morning. You need to be on a taxi no later than 4;45am. Your hotel can arrange it for you the night before, or call a few minutes earlier. Generally they show up within 5 or 10 min from the time you call them. I generally call myself and book one with the taxi company the night before for the next morning.

I would allow closer to two hours if you have luggage to be checked. Here's Ron in Rome's excellent take on the subject: For a 06:00 EU flight, connecting in say Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, or Paris, you need to be at check-in at least 1.5 to 2 hours in advance. They will STOP allowing check-in about 30 minutes before the plane is scheduled to depart (depending on the airline as some say 45 minutes – check yours!). The challenge at FCO and other European airports, especially with "connector" flights, is that possibly only two desks are open to check in your flight -- and EVERYONE has to go through these two desks. So get there at least 1.5 hours if not 2 hours before you are scheduled to leave. Some counters will not even OPEN until 1.5 hours before the flight... but you still have to be "in line" when the counters do open!
