Early morning trip to Florence Airport

We have a flight out of Florence Airport at 6:30 am on Saturday. Our B-n-B is quoting us $65 to the airport at 5:00 am...saying there is a surcharge. Should I just go with this or be looking at other options? I was s little surprised the price was so high :( We are about 10 min walk from Academia (David) in residential area.

There is a fixed rate. I think it's 22E-25E or so. No surcharge for taxis earlier as far as I know.

They should be able to call the night before to arrange one for you. Our hotels have always been great getting taxis for us. The last few times we were ready early, and the taxi was already outside the hotel waiting for us.

We've always stayed in the center, so no traffic allowed, but the cabs can come pick you up right in front of your hotel.

We also had a very early flight from Florence to Paris, we asked our Apartment Host about an early morning cab. She told us that they are very unreliable and that they do not drive down our street (we were close to the Duomo) and that we would need to be on the street corner in the morning, she would call for us and if there was a problem she would drive us herself. That morning we walked to the corner and the cab was waiting for us. So have your hotel call one for you like the PP stated, I don't remember how much it was but it was not 65€, more like 25ish..

Hello,
It should be a fixed amount and I think we paid a couple extra euros for the bags about 24-25 Eu total.
Perhaps they have a private car service they use but a regular cab is much less than $65 and it is a short ride to the airport especially that early in the morning. I don't think the airport opens until about 5am.

$65 for 6km (4 miles)? That's ridiculous.
I never paid that much, not even from my house on the opposite side of Florence from the airport.
The night flat fare from the city center is 23.30 euro, plus 1 euro per bag in the trunk. There is also a add'l surcharge per person if there are more than 3 passengers.
They are very reliable. I've used taxi in Florence for my entire lifetime (including nearly 30 years living there) and they've always arrived with 5 min from my call, no matter when I called them.

Esatto Roberto.
It usually take si 3 to 4 minutes.
If the street is very busy or narrow, they will however not wait for ages. When you call they tell you within how long they will be there. So you need to be there that's all. Price ranges between 20-25 euros.
I would not stay in such a hotel where they are such ladri.

Alas, I do not find Florence taxis to be so reliable - when it is raining or when there is a trade fair in town, the system gets overloaded and you may need to call several times and wait before getting a car. - But when reserving a day in advance, the reservation is always faultlessly honored, this is why when I have to get to the airport very early, I always reserve a taxi the evening before by phoning at 055-4242 or 055-4390 ore 055-4798.

The fixed fare between airport and city centre is:
ordinary eur 20,00 - festive days eur 22,00 - night (10pm to 6am) eur 23,30
plus 1 euro per luggage piece

Thanks for the replies. I will ask if they can call and order a taxi the night before.

I have tried to get the phone number for the taxi service loaded into my phone using "What's App", it doesn't want to work. I tried it with +011 39 etc and also just +39 etc. We have our phones in airplane mode with Wi-Fi. We decided not to use minutes or roaming.

I have also been looking for our best taxi stand option. I was hoping there is one closer than the train station, since I heard it can get pretty sketchy around there. Looks like others have asked about maps of taxi stands and the taxi app was referred to, names locations but no map. Anyone know of a map?

Thanks,

Michelle

Fustrating, I was hoping to have some kind of back up plan.

the person at the other end of a WhatsApp call or SMS has to also be on WhatsApp.

Is a taxi company likely to have WhatsApp running? I think you will need to try another method, if you don't want to use minutes and have good wifi, like Skype Out or other VOIP.

The format for entering the Florence phone number 055-4242 into a cell phone is +390554242 (+39, then the number including the zero, with no dashes).

However, as Nigel says, if you're not using regular calling but instead an app like Viber or WhatsApp, the other party has to have the same app. You could use Skype Out (requires Skype credit), if you are sure you will have WiFi when you make the call.
