Early Morning Flight in Venice - Will I make it?

My husband and I need to be at the Venice airport by about 6am to make our 8am flight. I'm a little worried about making it on time. I don't want to spend a small fortune on a private water taxi since there are just two of us. The 'buses' start near that time, but perhaps not early enough. Oh, we're staying just NE of San Marco.

I've done both, and while the water taxi was cool, the alilaguna will get you there for your early morning flight with no problem. S. Marco was our closest stop, but since we were light on luggage, our hotel suggested walking to the Fondamente Nove stop, which picks up 40 minutes later, and is the 2nd to last stop. The little bit of extra sleep and lovely walk made it a good call.

Since you are staying near San Marco and will probably need to take a vaporetto to P le Roma, you can also consider taking Alilaguna. Linea Blu leaves San Marco around 4:50 and gets you to tha airport at 6:09. http://www.alilaguna.it/lineablu.html You may be closer to the San Zaccaria stop. Current cost is 13 euro per person.

We loved our water taxi ride, but it is more expensive. I like to say I did the water taxi instead of a gondola ride, which would have also been expensive. They did charge an extra fee for the taxi because it was the early hours of the am. ( I think it was 20 Euros extra, but our hotel had told us what the cost would be). When the taxi lets you off at the airport dock, there are regular taxis trying to get to take you to the terminal, but if you have the time and energy you could walk. I think it was an extra 10 Euro for the taxi to the terminal from the dock.

If you are really concerned and don't want to take any chances, there is a Marriott literally right outside the airport, you could stay there your last night. They have a free shuttle that will drop you off at your gate as well.

Not a problem, nothing is even open at 6am at that airport. We stayed in the airport over night thinking we needed to be there at first light. Took the 11pm or so bus on the day before. We used the Number 5. Ended up not being a problem at all, and we suffered needlessly, since the terminals don't even open till 45 minutes before the first flights out. Its a very uncomfortable airport to sleep over in and I lost my cool Italian straw hat! Seems all the flights back to the US are these early, first flights.

Thank you for all the suggestions! Since our hotel is already paid for we will certainly be leaving from there in the morning. It sounds like the Alilaguna will be the best choice. We'll have to be up really early, but that's the way it goes!

We leave the morning of October 21st, or I would love to share a taxi! Too bad...

I have the same problem, staying near San Marco also but my flight is at 7am! I posted this question a few weeks back and got great replies: It's always nice to stay in Venice the last night before flying out. But, for a 7:00am flight, the $130 water taxi ride looms large. The $130 is for up to 6 people so if you are in a group of people, it might work. Travelers report that its a most wonderful experience to "James Bond" through the canals at dawn. The second choice of the night vaporetto and then the ATVO will also work. AND: I'd suggest the Alilaguna boat if you don't want to spend the (lots) extra for the private water taxi. Venice is a just barely waking up at those hours and it is a strangely wonderful experience wandering around then. I'd suggest a small flashlight if you don't already take on in your kit. I would have no qualms about safety and would also offer the same suggestions to my wife or daughter. AND You might be able to arrange something similar with guests at your hotel. You might want to inquire when you check in if anyone has asked about the taxi to the aiport and that you are interested in sharing. GOOD LUCK! and if you are doing this on the morning of Oct. 26 -let's share a ride!

So the buses leave early but from where? Could someone fill me in on the bus system in Venice? Do we catch it at the train station? We are arriving by train, but we also leave from the airport very early Sat. morning. Our flight is around 7 a.m.

Susan - Buses leave from the Pizzale Roma which is near but not connected to the train station. It's on the same vaporetto lines as the train station.

Reading the replies since I have the same concerns - we have a 7am flight out. RS book recommends NOT staying by the train station, however, looks like that might be the easiest to get to the airport early. We only have two nights in Venice. Would it be better to stay by the station or does it really matter? We haven't booked our room yet but need to quickly. Also, did somebody else say the were leaving Saturday? We leave 10/23.

No, you don't need to stay near the train station. Stay where you like, and plan on catching the alilaguna; it will get you there in plenty of time.
