I was going to buy my ticket online for the Vatican, then go at 8:30am and wait in line. Is that a good plan, or go mid afternoon??

Morning for certain! The afternoon sun is beastly. Mornings are at least tolerable.

A better plan (IMHO) is to purchase the Pristine Sistine Tour ,which will get you into the Sistine Chapel earlier than (most) other tour groups and is an excellent tour in itself. I dont usually do group tours , but was very glad we did this one. Vatican area very crowded and it was well worth having the guide and earlier access.
