My husband and I are catching a 6:25 am flight (Sunday Oct. 4,2009) out of Venice. Any suggestions on a reasonbly priced place to stay and how to get from the hotel to the airport(Marco Polo)in the wee hours?

Mary, with a 6:25am departure from Venice-Marco Polo, you won't find a bus or Alilaguna boat that can get you there before 5:05am. The first No.5 ACTV bus departs the Piazzale Roma at 4:40 on weekdays and Saturdays. It's later on Sundays. The first ATVO bus departs at 5:00am getting you there at 5:20am. If that is a choice for you, you will need to research the night vaporetto to get to the Piazzale Roma on time for the first bus out.
Other than the above, you have 3 choices. 1) stay nearby the airport. There's a Marriott Courtyard and there is the Titian Inn Hotel & Residence - both quite OK, reasonable and with shuttles. You can actually walk to the terminal from the Marriott. 2) take what I call the "James Bond" water taxi ride from your hotel to the airport. 90E-125E ($126-$175)for up to 5-6 people. Your hotel can make the arrangements. It's expensive but watching Venice come alive in the morning on a fast boat is supposed to be unforgettable. 3) Take one of the last buses from the Piazzale Roma to the airport the evening before and sleep in the airport.
