I am flying out of Florence at 7:30 on a Sunday in September. Staying near Porta Romana. How early do I have to get the cab to check in for this flight timely?
Are you exiting Schengen?
If not I’d guess be there by 5:30-in a taxi shortly after 5
The check in desk won’t open much earlier than that
I believe the airport opens at 5 am
WE are in an apartment so I need to do my own booking. Is there a recommended cab company that is reliable for booking for airport runs in Florence?
We are flying to Paris so not exiting Schengen. It was 7:30am or 6:30pm. or taking a plane from Pisa in the afternoon -- we decided to bite the bullet and get to Paris early then find a place to get lunch in our neighborhood till the apartment is ready.
There are a few taxi apps available
They have been mentioned here on the forum
A search should find those posts
One of them is called FreeNow
Be at the airport at least 60-75 min prior to departure or 90 minutes if you want to be more comfortable. It’s a small airport so check-in and security procedures are generally quick.
The check-in positions for your flight will open 2 hours prior to departure but at first there will be only one agent therefore you will start to get worried as the line might be long, then about 60 to 90 min prior to departure more agents will increasingly be added, and after they are done putting on their make up and lipstick and having the last phone talk with their boyfriends before starting to work, they will finally open more positions, so the line will disappear extremely quickly. I’ve learned over the dozens of times flying out of Florence that the later I arrive, the quicker the check-in. Security procedures are quick as well.
The taxi ride from Porta Romana will be less than 20 minutes, especially that early in the morning. Italians commute to work after 7:30am, usually immediately after getting out of their shower (women put on their make up while driving or, as described above, when already at work).
Below are the two largest taxi cooperative companies in Florence. You can summon one via website, via app, via phone via SMS text message. You can also book in advance. If you call you can opt for the English speaking operator.

Robert is correct about the desk agents trickling in one by one….it can make you feel frazzled.
I think they do it just to see the customers get agitated…. ;)
I’ve flown out of there early morning many times.
You think you’re never going to make it but you do.
I like to get there about 2 hours pre flight.
Miuccia, having recently left by taxi to airport, it works the opposite way: when you reserve a taxi in advance, the company will ask for your cell phone number and if you do not show within 2 minutes from the agreed time, they will call you and check.
Another history from real life: my brother had to leave very early and asked to reserve a taxi, they told him they could not reserve him a car. I told him: just call at your time in the morning (6.30am or so), if no taxis are available I will come to you with my car and fetch you - but there was no need as in the morning there were available taxis. It looks like the companies do not want to commit a large number of cars to reservations; so, it is better to reserve early if you do not have a safety brother in Florence.
Since Roberto is a Florence native and our resident Florence expert, I’d follow his advice.
I will confer with the landlord about this and I am sure they will arrange it and also be back up help -- they do not live on site but they seem competent and helpful. We have stayed at this location before but I don't remember how we got to the airport or even which airport we flew from. I don't think there is a nearby hotel, but will check that out.
