My friend and I will be in Italy this summer, staying at a place about a 1-1/2hr train ride outside Bologna and will have a 6:15am flight (from BLQ) returning home. I'm wondering what the best option is for getting to the airport that early. It seems a waste to have to pay for a hotel when we'll have to leave the hotel by at least 3 or 3:30am. Will it be staying at the airport for us?! Any other ideas? I saw on another thread someone had mentioned having a 6am flight out of bologna, but they didn't say what they'd done for accommodations.

Last night stay at the airport hotel in Bologna. You need some sleep before flight back to US. You would be terribly exhausted if you try to do it without sleep.

You need to be at the airport at about 5am for a flight that early.
The shuttle/taxi ride from the station to the airport is about 15 min.
That means that your train would need to arrive by 4:40.
If your location is 1.5 hours from Bologna the train would need to depart by 3.10am.
There are simply no trains that early in the morning, except for some long distance night trains which stop only in major cities.
My suggestion, actually not a suggestion, but a peremptory order in order for you to make the flight, is to spend your last night in Bologna. You don't need to stay at an airport hotel (the area is an industrial boring area), although I've stayed there at the Sheraton and the hotel was nice. You can stay in beautiful downtown Bologna, and take a taxi in the morning. The trip is about 15 min from the city center.
