Early EARLY morning transport to Rome FCO?

Best way to get to FCO from Colosseum area in time to check-in for a 6:45am flight? Are there any buses or trains that run after midnight?
This is for a 26 year old who is used to sleeping in airports, if that is the only option, so no need to discuss staying at airport hotels.
Thanks!!!

I will just say that you need to be sure and get there very early. We too had a 6:45 am departure. We arrived at 4:30 and found the line already snaking around and around. We made it to the gate with 5 minutes to spare before boarding... We did not even get our bottles of water!

Sally - Did you stay near the airport or did you get there from Rome? If so, how? This question gets asked a lot, so your advice should be particularly helpful.

On our last trip we had a 7:00 AM departure from Malepnsa and so stayed near the airport with our rental car. We dropped the car at 5 AM before the rental office was even open (took lots of pictures of its condition but no problems at all). We got in to the terminal and found, same as you did, a huge line already waiting. We had about ten minutes to get a quick cappucino before the flight boarded.

We stayed at the Hilton at the airport specifically so we'd be close. We really thought 2 hours would be plenty. We did make it - barely!!!

According to the Fiumicino Web site there is limited night bus service. The last night bus leaves Roma Tiburtina at 03:45. It also stops at Roma Termini. See this page: http://tinyurl.com/2ok5sf.

For this early of a flight, another option would be to take a cab. I believe the standard fare from most Rome locations to the airport is 40 euros. Talk to your hotel and they can arrange to have a cab at your hotel early the day of your departure. I recall that it was about a 40 minute ride from the Vatican area to the airport this past summer. (Maybe even quicker at this time of the morning.) Good travels.

It was good to see the post as I had the same question a few weeks ago, I think we will opt for the uncomfortable night at the airport; stay up late and get there early with time to spare...With our hotel at 135E a night, it hardly seems worth the cost for a few hours of sleep and worry about getting there in time. We are taking that same 6:45 a.m. flight

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions. It's my son's decision to make, but I'm with Chere - might as well take the late train or bus and get in line for the plane. Waking up at 2am to take a limo doesn't make a lot of sense in his situation. He'll have a 15 hour plane trip to India to sleep!

Chere: It looks like Terminal B at FCO has an area with benches where you can "try" to catch a few winks, but the ones without arms go early!

Thanks again everyone.
