We leave Florence Saturday 5/13 at 6:45am headed back home via Amsterdam. We will have luggage to check. The plane appears to be about 1/2-2/3 full. I emailed the staff at FLR regarding the time for us to be there and was told only that the gate opens 2 hours prior. The airport shuttle doesn't begin until 5:30 so I'm trying to determine what time we will require a taxi. We are staying near Duomo in an apartment, not a hotel. Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.

I would get there at least 90 minutes before the flight, in case there is increased security. You can reserve a taxi the night before (your apartment owner probably has a phone number for you to call).

The airport is small, with no more than 6 flights departing between 6:30 and 8:30. The check in in the new check in hall won't take you more than 5-10 min. Then the walk to the departure gates through security will be equally short (never spent more than 20 min from taxi drop off to gate. If you get there by 5:30 you will have plenty of time for breakfast before they start the boarding process. The taxi ride from the Duomo is no more than 20 min. (No traffic at that time) So book your taxi for 5am or shortly thereafter, to have plenty of time to load the taxi and go.

And be sure to be downstairs waiting and ready on the street at least 5 mins before your taxi is due.
I have taken many taxis at 0-dark-O-Clock in Florence to the airport, and they have never failed to arrive on time or early.
Just makes it easier for you and the driver.
Florence airport is very small, and easy to check in, and get organised.
