Article about the constant work to keep the Duomo up to snuff.
Thank you so much. I have long wanted to go up on the roof of the Duomo, ever since my son studied in Italy and recommended it, knowing how much I would enjoy it. But we never made time until our trip last September, when we had one night in Milan on our way between Luzern and Lago di Garda.
Our hotel was just 80 meters from the Duomo, and our room had a balcony with a view of the lower levels. But going up on the roof by way of the steps was a real treat. This was the earliest entry in late August, and fortunately the roof was not crowded with people lounging about as shown in the photos. The up-close views of the sculptures from there are amazing—- but one can also see how some have suffered from the ravages of time.
I was also struck by how beautiful the Duomo is when seen from the piazza around sunset. And how so many people just stand in a sort of hushed awe at the scene. (But not everyone).
