Are advanced tickets required to tour the Duomo?
When we were there in March we just went to the counter and bought the ticket. In the past no ticket was required.
If you book the tickets online, you can skip the lines. We were there about 2 weeks ago and the lines were long. This was because of pretty thorough security screening to get in--everyone wanded front and back, and bags checked. It was not crowded inside.
pam,
I don't recall any tickets being required to visit the main part of the Duomo, but there were security checks. However, as I recall tickets are required to visit the roof, and you can buy those at the ticket office behind the Duomo. The guidebook should have all the details.
Tickets are required to go in the Duomo and on the roof. I found the best place to buy the tickets was at a ticket office in a building directly behind the Duomo.
The roof is the best part. There's an elevator up.
If it's raining or for some reason the roof is closed, go to the top floor Cafe at La Rinascente for a relatively close-up look. Have an expensive drink or light meal.
Bought my tickets when I got to the Duomo. Wasn't much of a line in mid September 2015, maybe 10 people in front of us to buy tickets. Don't remember the exact amount but we didn't wait long at all.
