Hello - I'm visiting Milan on a short trip on September 16. I'll be arriving at the Duomo about 5 PM. Is the 2.50 EUR ticket the most appropriate for a short visit like this? Is it a good idea to buy advance tickets since I won't be in Milan very long?
I think the roof terraces are a must do, and would head there on arrival. Duomo closes at 7pm so you have 2 hours. I wouldn't think pre purchasing tickets a necessity. There was no wait when I visited in July 2012.

Can't remember ticket prices or what 2.5 ticket gets you. I took a lift to the roof and it was absolutely amazing...... Milan has some pretty cool stuff and that was top 3.
The visit to the church costs €2. If you want to visit the roof (worth it!), the price is €9 if you take the stairs, or €13 if you take the elevator.
Here are all the types of tickets and visits you can chose: http://www.duomomilano.it/en/infopage/hours-and-admission/80f6c2df-2c0f-4ddd-aca8-c5cbc768189e/
We visited last September and did not purchase advance tickets. There was no wait at all. We took the stairs and compared to other church climbs around Italy, it was quite easy.
We visited this past May around mid-day and got the combo ticket. There was no line to go up to the rooftop by elevator, but there was a huge line to get in the Duomo because of security. It was soon after the bombing at the Brussels airport, and they were doing bag checks and wanding. We waited about 45 minutes to get in. Security may have eased, and later in the day may be better. We had a tour scheduled for later that didn't include the Duomo, so that was our chance to see it.
I was there this last September and really enjoyed seeing the Duomo and going on the roof. The ticket line near the entrance took about twenty minutes. You can purchase tickets at the Tourist office in the building behind the church. There was no waiting there. After you are done seeing the Duomo, be sure to go in the Gallery Shopping center which is right next door to the Duomo. If you are pressed for time, you can just walk through it in 5 minutes without going in any of the shops. It is a beautiful shopping center.
