Is it worth it to pay for the tour and to climb the stairs? We are planning on visiting the museum. We are going in December. Thanks all for advice.
YES! Definitely worth it!! If you are in reasonable shape it is not a difficult climb. The last 10-ish steps is an iron ladder (as opposed to stairs) I was a bit concerned about this beforehand....no need to be concerned. We had a spectacular weather day March 2019, one of the highlights of our time in Florence! And definitely you earn your evening gelato with all the stairs! Gelateria La Carraia was our favorite stop!. Enjoy!
Be sure to visit the Duomo Museum
Yes, well worth it, and yes to Duomo Museum it's excellent. We also climbed the Campanile (414 steps) the same day we climbed the Duomo (463 steps). We do not necessarily recommend that, but the Florentine steak we had for dinner that night was well-earned!
Just to be clear you can schedule to climb the stairs - either Duomo with a timed ticket or the adjacent Giotto's Bell Tower - without a tour. Any tour of the Duomo is a separate ticket probably offered by a third party.
Official ticket site:

You get a three day pass and all tickets are untimed other than the Duomo climb. Second the vote for the Duomo museum and be sure you keep going up until you get to the top when you visit the museum.
Enjoy,

We always climbed the Campanile instead. Great views of Florence WITH the dome.
I agree with Sherry.
If you climb the campanile you get great views too, but with the Duomo in them!
It’s an easier climb and plenty of wide open landings to rest between flights.
Hi, for those who have climbed the Giotto's Bell Tower recently, how was your experience viewing through the black mesh that was added to the top of the tower? Was the view still worth the climb? Thank you!
We did the Giotto Tower climb last October. It was definitely worth it, even with the mesh at the top. The mesh is probably an inch square, rather than a fine mesh so I was able to get some great photos just by placing my phone against the mesh and shooting through the openings.
Great, thanks for the feedback!
