due diligence

I am looking at renting an apartment in Rome -- long term. I want to be sure it is a scam-free deal. In the US I can look up property ownership, etc to clarify/verify. How do I do this in Italy from the US? I don't want to end up with zip minus $$$ and/or find us living in a sardine packing plant. Thanks, -- Ed

You may want to enlist the aid of a local (Italian) real estate agent who might be willing to check out a property on your behalf, or he/she might know of properties that they can personally recommend.

Thanks, Scott. I'll have to do something like that, I'm sure. My wife and I are native Texans in the Seattle area since late '91. If we don't expatriate, we plan to relocate back home. How's things in Big D? -- Ed

The lady that rented us ours might have info that you need, although she herself may only have short-term properties. We are renting an apartment and so far her dealings have been wonderful in every way. She is in the US. The website is Italyperfect.com

Good luck!
