I'm driving from Tuscany area to Rome to catch my 10 am flight home on a Saturday morning in April. Trains from Florence don't get in early enough to Termini to transfer and get to the airport to catch my flight. My options are to fly from Florence ($130) or drive my rental car and drop it off at the airport. This is my first trip to Italy and I'm a bit concerned about driving into Rome. Is it better - by better I mean easier!!- to drop my car off at the airport or Termini
You don't mention which Rome airport you're flying out of. If it is FCO, you never get close to the city proper if you drop off at the airport. You'll take the ring road around Rome, then follow the signs to the airport. Most car rental companies drop off at the garage in front of the airport, with a walkway straight into the terminal. I think there is even a service station at the airport, so you can return your car with a full tank of fuel.
On the other hand, driving to Termini would take you to into the center of Rome, and would be much more difficult.
Drive directly to the airport and drop there. Very easy.
I assume you are flying out of Leonardo DaVinci which is the Fiumicino Airport (Rome). By all means drive. It is easy. It wouldn't hurt to learn a few Italian road signs.

I have done this many times and will be doing this in Sept.
