Does anyone know if rental cars can be dropped of in cinque terra somewhere, possibly Vernazza or Monterosso? It would be nice to avoid La Spezia if possible.
There are no rental car agencies in the five towns. There are barely roads to them. La Spezia is closest.
Out of curiosity, why do you want to avoid LaSpezia? If it is to not drive in a town that size, then I'd avoid renting a car at all.
Doug's answer (no car rental drop-offs in the CT) doesn't surprise me, that thought occurred to me--I mean, why would they have car rental drop-off locations in the CT, since they hardly have any roads?. But I didn't know for sure and that's why I suggested that you take a look on the internet--but Doug has saved you the trouble of looking. What most people do is drop off the car somewhere, anywhere--before they get to the CT and La Spezia is one of the two common drop-off places, the other being Genoa.
La Spezia is just fine for dropping off a rental car. Just be careful to look up the rental office on the internet to check their location and hours of operation for the office. I've looked up the La Spezia location before and its not that close to the train station. You might need to take a bus or taxi to the train station. Again, watch out for the hours. There are two drop off locations in La Spezia. One closes on weekdays at 6:30pm and is closed on Sundays. It's open only in the morning on Saturdays. The other office (Downtown), closes on weekdays at 7:00pm and is closed on both Saturday and Sunday. As a personal choice, I would never drop off a car after hours and think that it would be the same car in the morning. If anything happens between when you drop it off and when the rental car next sees it, you have no evidence that you didn't cause the damage or theft.
Also, as mentioned above, except for rare circumstances, tourist cars are not permitted in the 5 CT towns. Definitely no car rental places there.
