Return rental car in Pisa

We are renting a car when we leave Florence to spend a few days touring the Tuscan countryside. After that we drop of the rental car and head to Cinque Terre. I initially planned to return the car in La Spezia but we are returning on a Sunday and the rental is not open. My new plan is to return the car on Sunday morning at the airport location in Pisa. Then I figure we can drop our bags at the train station while we tour Pisa and the leaning tower for a couple of hours before catching the train to CT. We are staying in Barberino Val D'elsa in Tuscany and Manarola in Cinque Terre.
Does this plan make sense? Suggestions?

Thanks
David

Your plan has my Genuine Tuscan Approval.
From Barberino take the road along the Elsa valley through Certaldo, Empoli. Just before Empoli take the SGC FI PI LI, a divided four lane freeway that is actually free. The acronym above stands for Strada a Grande Comunicazione Firenze Pisa Livorno. Italians like long names for roads. Once on that highway follow it to Pisa (at a certain point it splits into two directions, to Pisa and to Livorno). It actually passes in front of the airport, so it's very easy to get to it.
From the airport to the train station there is now a shuttle bus as the people mover hasn't been completed yet.

You've confirmed that there is a luggage locker system at Pisa?

There is a manned Deposito Bagagli (left luggage storage) at Pisa Central station (it's not a locker system, you give the luggage to an attendant similar to a cloak room in a theater). When retrieving the luggage, consider that there might be a long line of tourists trying to do the same, so plan for possible delays when you plan your departure from Pisa.

Thank you for the confirmation of my plan. It is great to have local knowledge!
