Drop off car rental at Florence Train Station or Borgo Ognissanti

Which would be easier and less stressful in regards to avoiding bus lanes and ZTL? Our accommodation is a 5 minute walk from the central market. From the Borgo area is it easy enough to catch a cab? I have a car booked thru Europcar and the whole situation is stressing me out. Last time we were in Florence with a car there was no issues mind you that was 17 years ago!

I know the airport would be easier however I have read it’s a horrible walk to the tram from the car rental drop off. I do have a child with a disability so I’m trying to keep it as less stressful and easy as I can.

I think the Europcar car rental return is still at the Interpark Garage Europa which is located on Borgo Ognissanti. Or at least that is where it was a few years ago.
Unless they now allow to return it at the underground garage under Piazza della Stazione, you may not have a choice. You need to check with Europcar when you pick it up to make sure.
I’ve given instructions on how to return the car at Garage Europa in the past and you can do a search using the search box above.
Catching a taxi is very easy. Just ask the Garage staff to summon you a taxi and they will do so for you, unless you want to call yourself or use the taxi app. Below are Florence’ main taxi cooperatives.
If you decide to return it at the airport I gave instructions on that option too. Don’t walk from the Airport Rental center to the airport terminal where the tramway stop is. It’s not a walkable path. Take the Car Rental Center shuttle van to the terminal.

We rented a car through Europcar (through Autoeurope) in May/June of this year….picking up in Florence rather than dropping off. BUT…the vehicles were only at the train station parking garage. It was a trying situation for us as we had taxied from the train station to the office on Via Borgo Ognissanti, only to be told that we had to return to the train station to pick up the car. We were told that this would be the situation until sometime in 2026 (road work, but we didn’t see any). I would absolutely find out…from someone in the Europcar company who is very familiar with the issues in Florence…where best to drop off your car. For us, as much as trekking back to the train station was a hassle (we walked…not too far but very hot and we’d been traveling all day), it was easy to get out of the parking garage and onto a main street. I would think that returning a car there would be much less stressful than squeezing through Borgo Ognissanti…if you have a choice. Then the taxi queue is right outside, so easy to reach that as well. And as others have noted in similar car rental threads, please remember to take date stamped photos of your car when you pick it up, noting any damage. When we picked ours up in Florence, our contract was signed in the office on Ognissanti…we hadn’t seen the car, which had some damage which was visible in our photos. When we dropped the car off at Europcar at the Rome airport, the Europcar representative noted that our contract showed the car had no damage at pickup. Showed him the photos and he was great…and said that “all kinds of things come out of the Florence Europcar office”…this with abundant eye rolls.

I realize that this is a lengthy post, covering just part of your concerns….but this was a car rental unlike any that we have had in Italy, and I worry that these glitches could cause you more stress than the usual travel ups and downs. Wishing you a wonderful trip!

If the Europcar return is now at the SMN station underground parking, where the Sixt Rental return is, your only way to return it there is through the itinerary below. I entered from Piazza Taddeo Gaddi, assuming you are arriving from the A1 FIRENZE SCANDICCI Exit

If you arrive from Via Nazionale, there is another route, but I doubt you will come from that direction.

Driving downtown Florence is messy, even for native Florentines like me. They keep changing roads.

Hello, thank you. I was going to cross the bridge at Borgo however I see there is an option now to return to the train station, if this is where for sure the cars are now being returned. It’s so confusing! So the route to the return at SMN was easy and avoided the ZTL and bus lanes? We use to live in Europe so my husband is a familiar driver, it’s just these new restrictions seem to be popping up all over Italy and unfortunately the pressure will be on me as passenger will to be spot them. Also is there a gas station to fill up that is close?

Thank you for the tips on dated photos of the dings on the car. We will be picking up in Rome so I have read it is the same way there as well.

Wouldn’t it be nice if Europcar jumped on there website and updated customers of all the changes in regards to Florence pickups and drop offs!

Oh well, When in Rome, I guess!

Assuming you come from the freeway somewhere (whether the FIRENZE IMPRUNETA exit or the FIRENZE SCANDICCI exit, or at FIRENZE NORD exit, all on the A1 freeway, there will be gas stations shortly after you pay toll, on the way to the city center. Refuel the car there at one of those stations as the mileage to the return location will be less than 5 miles regardless. Do not use the FIRENZE SUD exit as from there it is more complicated to reach the SMN station or Borgo Ognissanti. Also do not use the FIRENZE NORD exit unless you plan to return at the airport.
Also do not shorten the name Borgo Ognissanti with Borgo only. To Florentines with “Borgo” often they intend Borgo San Lorenzo, a town in the Mugello Valley, and that would not be where you want to go.
Set your navigator to arrive at PIAZZA TADDEO GADDI,
The piazza is across the Ponte Alla Vittoria (bridge).
Once at PIAZZA TADDEO GADDI set your navigator for whichever location Europcar wants you to return the car nowadays.
Either the one I posted above (the Sixt car rental return) or the Interpark Garage Europa on Borgo Ognissanti. Google Maps knows the way from Piazza Taddeo Gaddi and it avoids bus lanes and cameras.

Be sure you fill up. I used Europecar in May and we had filled up the previous night and only driven about 30 km to the airport that morning. The person insisted we "fill it up" even after I was like "just charge me." The fuel indicator line didn't move after we put 5 euros of fuel in.
