Drop Car and easy connection to airport in Rome?

Hi all,
Going on the V/F/R Rick Steves tour in October. Staying an extra two days to track down family roots in Salmon (2 hr east of Rome).

Two questions
1. Has anyone used Southern Italy Travels to do research on family heritage or locals tours?

But more practically
2. We return with a car on a Thursday evening and our Flight from FCO is 10AM Friday.

So question: Where should I drop the rental and where can I stay so that I can just easily wake up and get to the airport?

Thanks for any input

Obviously, the one option is to drop at the airport and stay there. You can walk from the Hilton to the airport. Or look for a drop point in Rome, spend the night in room and catch the train or a cab in the morning. With a 10am flight (assuming direct flight back to US) it would be fairly easy to be at the airport roughly around 7am.

On my last 2 visits to Italy in 2016 & 2017, I spent the night before my flight in a hotel in Fiumicino and simply drove to the airport the next morning. Returned the car and entered the terminal.

We've done it both ways, the on-airport Hilton (really short walk to dedicated elevator to one end of the concourse), and off-airport. You do have to make sure the hotel shuttle runs when you need it, and that it's free. I would investigate free-standing restaurants in the selected off-airport hotel's area, in the hope of finding something walkable, attractive and "local". You have to consider your luggage volume as well.

Thanks for the input. Good direction. I knew that there had to be decent places to stay right there. I don’t think that I want to fight with a place in downtown... staying close to the airport makes sense with the early flight.

The Tulip gets good reviews and photos looks nice. Easy shuttle to airport, and seems to be significantly less $$ than the Hilton. Paying more for closer location and brand, I suspect.

Thanks all !

There is one advantage of staying at the Hilton if you are interested. They provide a free shuttle service to downtown Rome. You can catch the shuttle, go into town and have a nice dinner, then catch the 10:00 pm shuttle back to the hotel.

That's what we did. We returned our rental at FCO and took the shuttle for dinner and a Walks of Italy Evening Stroll Tour. It was a nice ending to our Italy trip. You can either walk to the terminal in the morning or have them drop you off, it's a free service. This really makes departure much less stressful.
