Drivingfrom Assisi to Monopoli (Puglia)

We are in Assisi right now and heading for Monopoli on Saturday. Very festive. There are recommended routes, one is a toll road from Ancona to Bari and there is also a parallel road (non-toll). Is there an advantage in terms of cost/time/road quality in either of these routes? Welcoming any recommendations. Grazie, Sherry P.S. Umbria is very beatiful, more wild and scenic than Tuscany IMHO. Delicious food!

We drove from Valfabricca (about 1/2 hour north of Assisi) to the gargano peninsula. We drove east to Ancona and then south along the coast. It was a relatively easy drive, even in the rain. You go through lots of tunnels on the drive to the coast. We wanted to see what the coast looked like and were glad we took that route. Before we left on our trip I had used this website to look at some driving options: http://www.drive-alive.co.uk/route_planner.asp If you have the time I recommend going to Matera or driving onto the gargano peninsula, both trips are spectacular.
