Driving Violations in Firenze

Anyone have the scoup about paying/not paying traffic tickets mailed to my home in the USA? Two of the tickets were five minutes apart as I "circulated on roads reserved to other vehicles.." I sent an email asking to pay 2 out of the 3 tickets I received and the response from collections designee was negative. Thank you!

Pay the fine. You violated the law and they are legitimate. You must have crossed more than on zone. Donna

Julie, Based on your description, it sounds like you transgressed one or more Zona Traffico Limitato areas. These are probably documented by photographic evidence, so these are legitimate violations and there's really no recourse. Were these received from "Municipal Outsourcing" (or something like that)? On the question of "paying / not paying", the rules of the HelpLine prohibit any suggestions which encourage breaking the law. You'll have to decide on which course of action to take. ZTL areas are becoming increasingly prevalent in many towns in Italy, and Florence especially is saturated with them. Kent posted a Map awhile ago that showed all the areas, but I'd have to search to find it. This is one reason why I try to avoid driving in Italy unless absolutely necessary. Good luck!

It also sounds like you drove on a section of the road reserved for buses (and sometimes taxis).

We know you didn't mean to do it, but this really is the constant lesson of why driving in Italian cities is not a very good idea if it can at all be avoided. There are numerous limited traffic zones, bus-only zones, one way streets, etc... It's not hard to violate at least one rule and the cameras catch you each time. Hence the 3 violations in short order. Chalk it up to experience and pay the fines.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I really appreciate the time you took to help a fellow traveler. I plan on paying the tickets. (Having said that, I'm a terrible procrastinator so I may end up having the answer to that question about what happens if you don't pay and go through customs in Italy ...)

Hi,
I know that there were not any posts that were saying outright that you should not pay the fine, but I cleaned out many posts here (partially because it started a mini argument) because, as our Community Guidelines state, we need to be very clear that there can be no information here about circumventing laws. Thank you for your understanding of this policy.

People often come here asking whether it is ok to not pay a fine or what will happen to them if they don't. I fully agree with the webmaster, this website shouldn't be about telling people or even suggesting that people don't need to pay fines for violating another country's laws. Period!
