Curious if anyone has a fave spot to stay on the relatively un-touristy portion of the southern Italian west coast, especially re: towns of Pizzo or Paola? And if Tropea is really worth the side detour? We'll be there in about three weeks...! Grazie.
Ciao...yes..I believe it is worth a side trip..but..part of what makes it lovely..that being Tropea..is its clear warm crystal blue waters for swimming. But..viewing that gorg water is just as wonderful. It will most likely not be beach weather..I spent 5 nights just outside Tropea at IL Borghetto Creatve Resort..and then drove to Maratea in Basilicata for 5 nights. Keep in mind Calabrian infrastructure is not like the north..but very affordable and the food is amazing. It depends on what you would like to do...it was July when I was there. People are lovely..the restaurants in Tropea were very very good..Tropea is small but also a very local town so you will have a nice taste of Southern Italian life. Pizzo was small but I loved walking around..there is a nice Piazza in the center..and small shops and a cathedral. We really liked our stay outside Tropea. Only about a 5 mi ute drive into town. We left our car at il Borghetto and called a tuk tuk style taxi for 5 euro. If I can assist further let me know. Oh..Maratea is very charming and I teresting..check it out to see if it calls your name. The countryside is beautiful but takes about 40min to get there from the highway..so worth at least a couple of nights. AgOn..it was summer so we were water oriented!
Thanks, Linda! This helps. Yes, not planning on doing much water activity there in March, except maybe dodging raindrops. We have most of the (3-month) trip planned but trying to fill in some holes and this drive up after Sicily is one. We will head to Matera from here--not to be confused with Maratea...though I often do!
