Driving Umbria and Le Marche

I am considering a self-drive through Umbria and Le Marche in July and/or August. I'll be in Italy for about three weeks total and figured on ten days or so to visit these two regions. I've been to Orvieto and Assisi, so I don't plan to visit them. However, I am looking for any suggestions on where to go, routes to take, places to stay, etc.

I'm always up for churches and wouldn't mind a day or two on the beach in Le Marche. I've seen my fill of museums. I'm really most interested in any aspects of local culture. Roaming quaint little towns on foot, soaking up the sun in a piazza, and wandering into the local bar, salumeria, or church are my ideas of a perfect afternoon.

I'm more more or less fluent in Italian and I like to wander a bit in the car so there are no barriers where these are concerned.

I am on a bit of a budget - fancy accommodations and fine dining are probably out, but I am open to all suggestions.

Any thoughts?

Thank you,

Your euro will go a lot farther in Umbria and Le Marche than in, say, Tuscany. Places I live in Umbria: Cortona, Todi, Gubbio, Spello, Montefalco.

I have only been to Urbino in Le Marche, but I am planning to visit Jesi, Macerata, Ascoli Piceno, and some other towns in June.

Google some images - you will see churches, castles, small town piazze.
