Driving to Sirmione, Lake Garda

We are driving from Bolzano in the North this October and wanted to know which side of the Lake is the best view side we should drive down by to get to our hotel in Sirmione?
Would appreciate comments,

Jean

My favorite route for driving from the north of Lake Garda to the south is the western side (Gardesana Occidentale). Despite, or perhapes there many tunnels, I think the road is fantastic.

What you can do is drive down the western side to Maderno, and then get the car ferry across to Torre del Benaco - that way you get the best views of all - from the water.
The drive from Torre to Sirmione is more interesting than from Maderno anyway, as the land flattens out there.

Thanks all, the West side it is.

Another question, would you stay in Riva del Garda rather than Sirmione? We're booked in Sirmione for two nights on our way to Milan.

Thanks again,

Jean

Agree with the other responses. The drive will take longer but more scenic. I prefer Riva to sirmione - on a more picturesque side of the lake and more beautiful in my opinion. October can be a good time to see the lake - clearer days , less people, and better weather (usually)!

I love Sirmione but I would say Riva is more fun. Sirmione might be still too crowded. OK to spend some hours in Sirmione of course.

On the face of it, Sirmione would seem to be more pictureqsue than Riva, but - it can be a complete zoo and overrun with tourists in its narrow lanes.
You would have to stay just outside the walls in the modern bit to find a hotel with parking.
So, my vote is for Riva too.
