driving to Rome

I will have a car and my plan is to keep it during the stay in Sorrento and drive the Amalfi Coast...is this crazy??
I'm also wondering if it is easier to turn car in and take train from Sorrento to Rome. Or drive car to outskirts of Rome and drop it off. Best place to drop car off in Rome area from the south?

You can do it, however check if your hotel in Sorrento has parking facilities. The biggest problem I have with that area is the parking, not so much driving along the narrow and curvy coast highway (however it will also depend on your driving skills in narrow spaces). If you don't feel comfortable you can always return your car in Sorrento. Several major rental companies have an office in Sorrento. From Sorrento to Rome you can take a Circumvesuviana train to Naples then the high speed train to Rome. There is also a bus service from Sorrento to Rome Tiburtina station (curreriviaggi.it). The bus will take 4 hours, the trains about 2.5 hours. If you decide to keep the car there are many rental office locations in Rome. Each major rental company has at least 3 office in various parts of the city. In addition there are rental locations at the 2 airports (Fiumicino or Ciampino). If you return to Rome to visit the city the best is to return the car to a city center location. Where exactly depends on which company you use.
