Driving to Puglia from Umbria

We are looking for a charming town to see and stay while driving from Civita D’Agliano to Vieste in October. Would love Puglia recommendations as well, although those accommodations have been booked for a long time. Thank you

How much time do you have for the drive? I have heard Sulmona is nice and that looks roughly to be halfway.
While in Vieste, I would stick to the Gargano area because the drives are very long, but if you have time to stay somewhere else after Vieste there are many many options, so let us know how much time you have for that as well (plus your departure point).

I believe you mean Civitella d'Agliano, near Viterbo, right?

I don't have any suggestions for you, but you might like to check the proposed route options suggested by ViaMichelin.com. If you zoom way in, the roads considered most picturesque will be highlighted in green.

We booked an inn in Sulmona! Thank you so much! We are traveling through Puglia for nine days after, beginning in Vieste.

Great! If you need input on Puglia, just say the word. I've been twice and it's got its fans on the forum. I tried to include the Gargano on both trips, as it looks gorgeous and I'm a nature lover, but it was just too far from everywhere else we were going with limited time. I'm fond of the Matera area (in Basilicata), the Itria valley in Puglia, and Lecce in the Salento.

I would love input for Puglia. We are booking a walk-in tour of Matera and a bike/lunch in Ostuni, but that’s it so far?

Those both sound great. Would you like to share where you are staying?
Near Matera, we loved our tour of Craco, an abandoned village. As you head to Puglia from there, if you take the coastal route, there is a temple at Metaponto--interesting mostly as it is just sitting there off the highway.
Near Ostuni, we liked just meandering around the villages--most take mere minutes to see, but the scenery is lovely.
The drive south of Otranto is scenic. I have somehow managed to skip entering Otranto and Gallipoli on both visits, something I need to correct! There is a town in the south called Galatina that I also want to get to one day.
We mostly did things outdoors--the park just north of Gallipoli is my favorite.
And of course Lecce is gorgeous (check out the Museo Faggiano).
Of the coastal towns, Monopoli is my favorite. Enjoy!
