We are planning a winter trip to Italy, Jan.1-11. We will arrive in Rome, but I want to drive south, to the Naples and Sorrento area before spending our last 3-4 days in Rome. What we need is a hotel in the area which will be convenient for using the train to visit Naples and Pompeii, or perhaps joining a group tour for those visits. We would also like to drive a bit on the coast and maybe to Paestum. I've searched and I've read my RS book, but going in winter isn't popular so information is thin. Can anyone give advice on the drive, hotel, tours?
We stayed in Sant'Agnello (next to Sorrento) 2 years ago. The train is close - and we used it to get to Pompeii and to Naples. I don't think the train schedules change much in the winter as they are local commuter trains. They are cheap and you buy the tickets at the station as you need them. We actually returned to Sorrento from Naples on a ferry which was fun and had great views - and I think we actually walked back to our place.
We've stayed at Hotel La Tonnarella in Sorrento 3 times and love it there. I recommend staying in Sorrento, which we also love.
