Driving to Mestre (Venice) and Trieste from Vienna

Hello all!

My husband and I have decided to rent a car in Vienna and drive down to Venice and Trieste and then drive back up for a quick 4 day exploring northern Italy trip.

Is there anyone that can give me good advice about buying toll passes in both countries (Italy and Austria) as well as where to purchase them.

I could also use some advice about ZTL's and if a map of where there are located is anywhere to be found. I was just recently advised about those nasty things.

We won't be going anywhere other than directly to Mestre (not driving into Venice, we are taking the train from our hotel) and then into Trieste following the driving directions from Google.

Also any information about the Trains/buses into and out of Venice would be beneficial. I can't seem to find that information anywhere.

Thanks!

In Italy, you pay tolls as you go, as you exit the autostrada (with blue signs). www.viamichelin.com will give you an estimate of Italian tolls for your route (about $20 from Villach to Venice, unless you request a route without tolls). The car that you pick up in Austria will either already have a toll sticker for Austria's motorways, or the rental agency can sell you one.

Trains run frequently from Venezia Mestre station to Venezia S. Lucia station. The train ticket must be date-stamped in the "machine" before you enter the track area of the train station. In front of S. Lucia station, you can catch the vaporetto (public bus) to get to your Venice sightseeing (described in guidebooks and at http://www.actv.it/en).
