Driving to CT for a day trip from Siena area

Where is the best place to park our car?

Any particular reason you are considering this as a day trip? Are you aware that it's a really long drive of about 3 hours driving time each way ?!?!

Don't do it! It's much too far for a suitable day trip and it really won't afford you much time to enjoy the CT. I think the CT deserves a minimum of 2 days.

We are spending two weeks at a farm house near Siena. I know that a day trip will not give us much time but I thought it would give us a taste so that we can decide if it's worth returning. If we left the house at 7 in the morning we would arrive before noon. We could spend the day exploring, taking a boat tour and return home by 11.

John, could you at least over night in the CT one night so that you're not commuting both ways in the same day?

John, surely it is not ideal, but if you want to just check the CT out and see if it is worth returning, since you are on a 2-week vacation in the same place, is doable. Here are the hints about car-driving there: - HARD TO PARK: high summer (mid-June to mid-August), weekends with very nice weather mid-August to November, March to mid-June. - EASY TO PARK: other days/months If you are travelling on a "hard to park" day, try Riomaggiore or Montessoro, which have larger parking facilities. In any city, you will park just outside the city limits and walk though the city (up to 1 mile, steep streets/cobblestone stairs) until you reach the "coastline" or the cliff

We are leaving for Rome next Friday. I was thinking about parking in La Speiza and taking the train. Would it make more sense to drive into one of the towns?

John, it's actually a good idea to park in La Spezia. You could take the train into CT and come back by boat or the other way around. Train station and harbour in La Spezia are a bit of a distance apart but a taxi can take you back to your car. The boat does take about 2 hours between La Spezia to Monterosso.
