Driving to Alba from Milan Malpensa Airport (plus wineries in Alba region)

My husband and I will be visiting the town of Alba in late September. We will be renting a vehicle at Milan Malpensa Airport. If anyone can help with the following questions, it would be much appreciated.

  1. Are there toll booths?
  2. What is the typical charge for a small vehicle?
  3. Automation toll booths or manned?
  4. Are there gas stations/rest stops along the way?

Second topic...

There are numerous wineries in Barolo and Barbaresco. What are the top FIVE that anyone can recommend? Is it better to book a tour ahead of time on-line? Or book the tour when we arrive in Alba?

Thank you.

We booked a wine tasting directly at a vineyard ahead of time, no tours are needed..
Write your hotel for information. Ours had lots of info for those staying there.
You will drive on Autostradas( highways) and will take a ticket when you enter and pay when you exit. Go to Google maps and look at your route. It isn’t that far, 2+ hours.

The tolls should be €14-15 and you’ll find both manned and automated toll booths. I had no problems with the automated ones - just like feeding bills or coins into a vending machine. And there are rest stops (very nice ones) on the Autostrade.

Can't give you advice on wineries but there are two enotecas in Barbaresco and Barolo that are wonderful 🍷🍷🍷🍷.

Driving on tolled motorways is not mandatory, especially on vacation. You could follow the blu signs to Novara and then head to Alba. On www.viamichelin.com there is an "avoid tolls" option on the left, but you'd better compare the driving times.

There are more and more toll stations that are fully automatic, but usually you'll see a sign over the last booth on the right with an hand holding some money. That's the manned booth. Avoid the yellow lanes marked Telepass.

Of course there are gas stations along the way, it's not a desert. They are open 24/7, but you'll need a real chip&pin card to use most pumps during the night.
