Driving through Tuscany and lodging.

I am planning to drive through Tuscany in middle October for 3 days. I don't have any particular plan what cities I am going to visit on a specific day. I am planning to visit cities such as Siena, San Gimignano, Assisi, Volterra, few towns in Chianti country and wherever the road will take me. Will it be difficult to find a reasonable place to stay like a hotel or Bed & Breakfast without reservations? Is it better to look for places to stay outside of cities so I will be able to park the car? Thank you for any suggestion.

Hello Sam, I am still currently on my holiday in Italy and just finished a four night stay in Tuscany. I would highly recommend Il Vacario in San Gimingnano. The host Fulvio and his niece are wonderful and they make you feel like you are at home with family. We found the location to be excellent for day trips to Siena, Florence, Volterra, Montepulciano and of course San Gimingnano. Good luck with your trip plans. Eric

As you have a car I would suggest to use that and book a place for several days in an agriturismo/b&b and take day trips from there. That way you don't have to pack and unpack every day. And you have a chance to get to know your host, get some insider tips on what's to see in the area. In the middle of October you shouldn't have problems without reservations, however, these places are usually outside town and not well indicated from the street. They are actually easier to find on the internet than while driving in the area. From that perspective I'd consider booking ahead of time.

We just got back, we stayed at this farmhouse in Castellina in Chianti... http://www.agriturismopoggetto.it/home_ing.htm It is very convenient as it is between Florence and Siena and only about 10 miles from the superstrada to get to Florence. We went to Greve and San Gimignano with ease from here
